Why Gelbvieh

The Gelbvieh breed in Bravaria has been involved in a systematic breeding program for production and testing of A.I. sires since 1958.It is a program of planned matings, where cows with top milk production records are evaluated for calving interval, conformation, soundness and disposition. Selected cows are joined to proven progeny tested bulls for the production of young sire prospects. What it really boils down to is that out of 50,000 bulls conceived by A.I. 50 of these are ultimately chosen for planned matings with the top 25% of cows.

Maternal Traits
Birth weights range from 65-95 pounds, with breed average of 84 pounds for heifers and 88 pounds for bull calves. Gelbvieh cows average more than 3,628kg of rich 4.% butterfat milk. This guarantees a high daily gain of calves in single and multiple suckling. Due to the strongly attached udder, milk flow will adapt to the amount of milk the calves need. Udder diseases and breakdown are therefore not likely to occur.

Feed Conversion
Economy of production relies heavily on feed conversion efficiency. Producing more beef or daily gain per tonne of fodder is probably the greatest efficiency consideration with any breed in any cattle production system. Gelbvieh feed conversion efficiency has been proven in the latest USDA trials in the Clay Centre, Nebraska.

Disposition
Generations of breeding has produced an exceptionally docile and gentle animal. This trait not only allows for ease of handling, but a reduced stress factor promotes better dietary digestion and faster gains through less energy loss due to stress, and therefore, above all increased longevity which reduces replacements.

Cross Breeding
The combination of superior maternal and growth traits qualify Gelbvieh for any commercial cross-breeding program. No matter what your goal, higher weaning weights, improved weight, superior carcass and killing out % of heavy milking fertile replacement heifers, Gelbvieh genes go to work to improve your herd.

Carcass
Gelbvieh is known throughout Germany as the breed with the best carcass in the beef business from the standpoints of carcass weight per day of age, dressing percentage, palatability and price received.
