MILKY MOTHERS
The Salers is the ideal suckler dam, having been selected over the centuries for the maternal traits of high milk yield from rough forage, early maturity (first calf at two years old) and short calving interval.
She is capable of calving the progeny from the more muscled terminal sires without assistance.
The Salers breed has been milk recorded in France since 1925. Selective breeding produced a cow that would simultaneously nurse a calf and produce quality milk for the local cheese industry.
The long lactation period of the Salers cow reduces the need for creep feeding of calves.
